Cavies are relatively easy to sex once you know what you're looking for. Cavies can be sexed from birth. Sadly many pigs are incorrectly sexed and this means that sows are often caught post partum. I always advise everyone to sex their pigs themselves and or ask the breeder/rescue/vet to show them if in doubt.
Boars (males) should to be removed from their mum between 4-6 weeks of age, they can ... more often than not be placed with an uncle boar or their dad until they are ready for new homes.
Note due to the sows natural season cycle it is impossible for a boar under 4 weeks of age to impregnate her. A sow comes into season every 14/16 days days, during this time she is only receptive for a short while. (under 24hours)
Once a sow has littered she comes into season pretty much right away. approx 2 weeks later she will have another season (pups are only 2 weeks old) her next season isn't until a further 2 weeks so there is no reason to remove boars prior to 4 weeks of age.
Each and every litter is different, so its up to us to decide when the time is right to remove them. Removing boars too early can be a bad thing too, so bare this in mind.
Boars (male) generally have an i shape to them, when pressure is applied just above the genital area the penis should become exposed. Sows (females) take on more of a Y look. This however is not a fool proof way to sex. If in doubt ASK.
